Ellie’s story

Just days before welcoming their new baby, the Mudge family received devastating news — their eldest daughter, Ellie, had cancer.

What began as mild stomach pain quickly turned into hospital visits, scans and a diagnosis no parent ever expects. In one of life’s happiest weeks, everything changed.

Ellie began intensive treatment and the family’s world shifted to hospital corridors and waiting rooms.

A place to stay, together

With each admission to Queensland Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House gave the family a place to stay close by. Ellie’s parents, grandparents and siblings could be there for her — bringing comfort and calm during uncertain times.

For Ellie, having her whole family close helped her feel secure. For her mum, it meant surviving newborn life, hospital stays and chemo schedules with the support she needed.

Moments that made a difference

Support from Children’s Hospital Foundation helped bring joy into Ellie’s days. Visits from animals, food trucks, the bravery beads and book trolley all helped ease the long hours. The hospital playground gave Ellie and her sisters a space to laugh and play.

These moments brought light when things felt dark — showing the power of kindness, care and community.
