Lucy’s Story – Why I Walk
In 2024, our world turned upside down when our daughter Lucy suffered a sudden bleed from an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her brain. She was rushed into the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, where she spent 18 days — 17 of those on life support. Lucy spent 80 nights and 81 days in the Queensland Childrens Hospital before she could be discharged to continue her recovery outside the hospital system.
Those days were long, frightening, and filled with uncertainty. Yet through it all, Lucy showed extraordinary courage. Slowly, she began to fight her way back — step by step, note by note. Her love for music never left her; even in rehab, she picked up her guitar and violin and played from memory, reminding us all that her spirit was unshaken.
Our family found a home away from home at Ronald McDonald House, where we could stay close to her and lean on the support of others who truly understood. Without the PICU team’s dedication, the hospitals dedication and the comfort of RMH, we would not have made it through the hardest chapter of our lives.
Now Lucy is walking again, relearning, rebuilding, and inspiring us every day. To honour her fight and to give back to those who carried us through, I walk all night.
We’ve formed a team — Pulse & Pace — for the All Night Long charity walk where I will be walking with with some good friends - one who is a paramedic and one who works in the PICU.
I walk through the night for Lucy.
We walk for the families who will come after us.
We walk so PICU and RMH can continue their lifesaving work.
Every step is a thank you. Every kilometre is a promise of hope.
