Dave’s determined to go the distance

For Dave, All Night Long is about more than completing a walking challenge. It’s an opportunity to support Queensland children and families facing some of life’s toughest moments, while proving to himself just how much he can achieve.

A mammoth effort in 2025

When Dave lined up for the inaugural All Night Long event in 2025, he wasn’t chasing a personal best. He simply wanted to be part of something bigger than himself, supporting Queensland’s sickest kids and their families.

But just months before the event, the 61-year-old grandfather received an unexpected diagnosis that dramatically impacted his ability to train.

Despite the setback, Dave was determined to take part.

When event day arrived, he approached the challenge with a simple goal: to give it his best.

After walking 18km through the Brisbane night, Dave made the difficult decision to stop. Rather than seeing it as a disappointment, he viewed it as an achievement. His experience demonstrated the same resilience shown every day by the children and families supported by Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland and Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“I just wanted to be part of the night and see what I could do. I was still proud of what I had achieved for the kids and myself.”

Seeing Brisbane through new eyes

One of Dave's strongest memories from last year's event was experiencing Brisbane at night from a completely different perspective. Walking along the river during the early hours of the morning revealed a side of the city he had never seen before.

But it wasn't just the scenery that left a lasting impression.

Dave was inspired by the stories of the people around him. From creative costumes and themed teams to families walking in honour of loved ones, every person had a reason for being there.

One particularly memorable moment was seeing a participant complete the 42-kilometre challenge alongside a friend who was both blind and deaf.

For Dave, it was a powerful reminder that determination comes in many forms and that incredible things can be achieved when people support one another.

Dave’s ‘why’

Like many participants, Dave does not have a direct personal connection to Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland or Children's Hospital Foundation. But he understands that illness can affect any family at any time.

That understanding drives his commitment to support families who are facing some of the most challenging times of their lives.

“Thankfully, our kids and grandkids are all healthy but that doesn’t mean they can’t get sick in the future. Another reason I decided to help in whatever way I could... none of us know what the future holds.”

Returning stronger in 2026

After enjoying the event so much last year, there was no question Dave would return.

This year, he’s returning with unfinished business.

Having always wanted to complete a marathon distance, All Night Long gives him an opportunity to challenge himself while making a meaningful difference for Queensland families.

Throughout the fundraising campaign, Dave has shared his journey through Facebook, conversations with colleagues and word of mouth, encouraging others to support the cause. He was also proud to become the first participant to reach VIP Club status for 2026.

While winter weather has made training challenging, Dave continues to stay motivated by focusing on his supporters and remembering why he signed up in the first place.

"It doesn't matter how far you get on the night; the most important thing is you're out there doing your best... just as the kids are doing their best."

Every step counts

As Dave prepares for another overnight adventure, he hopes his story encourages others to take on the challenge, regardless of their age, fitness level or experience.

Because All Night Long isn’t about being the fittest person on the course. It’s about stepping outside your comfort zone, challenging yourself and walking in support of families facing some of life’s toughest moments.

And for Dave, that’s a challenge worth taking on again. You can register for All Night Long here.
