Phoenix's Story

14 Oct 2026

For families sitting beside a hospital bed in the middle of the night, every beep of a monitor, every conversation with a doctor, and every hour spent can feel endless.

All Night Long is about standing with families facing those moments. Families like Phoenix's.

Born with spina bifida myelomeningocele, hydrocephalus, Chiari II malformation and syringomyelia, Phoenix's journey has been far more complex than his family could ever have imagined. While they learned about his spina bifida during a routine 20-week scan, nothing could prepare them for the challenges that lay ahead.

Like so many families with an ill or injured child, Phoenix's family found themselves navigating a world of medical uncertainty, long hospital stays and life-changing decisions. Instead of bringing their newborn home and settling into family life, they spent weeks learning how to care for a child with complex medical needs while holding onto hope for the future.

A devastating turn

When Phoenix was just three months old, his condition took a devastating turn when he stopped breathing. His family found themselves in the fight of their lives, advocating for urgent surgery after being told there was little that could be done.

The lifesaving procedure required surgeons to remove approximately 90% of Phoenix's cerebellum to relieve pressure caused by his Chiari malformation. It was an incredibly difficult and uncertain time.

"There really aren't words to describe what it feels like to be told your baby is seriously unwell, and then to watch them fight for their life."

Instead of enjoying the early months of parenthood as they had imagined, Phoenix's family spent long periods in hospital, learning medical terminology, meeting specialist teams, and adapting to a completely different reality. Despite the fear, they remained focused on one thing: giving Phoenix every opportunity to thrive.

The support that helped carry their family

Throughout Phoenix's journey, the support of Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland and the Children's Hospital Foundation helped make some of the most difficult days a little easier.

Staying across the road at Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland meant Phoenix's family could focus on being together and supporting their son without the added stress of long travel times or worrying about where they would sleep.

Alongside that practical support were the moments of kindness from the Children's Hospital Foundation that brought comfort and joy during extended hospital stays. Whether it was a volunteer photographer capturing precious newborn photos, receiving a thoughtful Mother's Day gift, collecting Bravery Beads or ensuring Phoenix could meet Santa while he was still in hospital, these experiences created lasting memories during an incredibly difficult chapter.

"These moments of support reminded us that while Phoenix was the patient, our whole family mattered too."

Why All Night Long matters

For families like Phoenix's, All Night Long is more than a fundraising event. It represents the reality of the long nights families experience when their child is in hospital. It's about making sure these families don't have to face them completely alone.

"We've spent nights beside Phoenix wondering what the next few hours would bring, waiting for doctors, listening to machines and desperately hoping that our baby would be okay."

Every donation helps provide families with accommodation, practical support, comfort and connection when they need it most. It helps ensure parents can remain close to their child and focus on what matters most during some of life's toughest moments.

Phoenix today

Today, Phoenix is doing remarkably well considering everything he has been through. Despite the significant challenges he continues to face, he approaches life with resilience, determination, and an infectious smile.

He has recently learnt how to navigate a wheelchair independently and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of his own. While he still requires ongoing specialist care and regular visits to Queensland Children's Hospital, his family says he tackles every day with joy and curiosity.

For his family, the future is not defined by Phoenix's diagnoses, but by the incredible little boy he is. Their biggest hope is simply that he continues to be happy, healthy, and surrounded by people who see him for his strengths, his personality and the joy he brings to those around him.
